Matthew 19:3-9 Exodus 15:22-29
Is there any hope of getting past the bitter waters of divorce? Is there anything past my own Marah? Why would Jesus be so dogmatic that divorce is wrong? Why would he say it was the wrong course of action to take? Better than 50% of marriages have been down this painful road and have experience miserable brokenness and despair, 67% in second marriages, and 74% the third time around.
Jesus isn't trying to put any of us in a box of misery. Some might say; "Hey if it doesn't work out, just get another one." Jesus foresees and realizes the pain, the sorrow, the heartache and grief that come as a result of divorce in marriage. When two people are joined on their wedding day, they become one flesh. God warns that divorce is the ripping apart of the one flesh that will be so painful.
What about the kids, who are they going to live with, who are they going to side with? They want to side with their parents getting back together. All this pain goes far beyond just the husband and wife. I've been through the grief in watching my parents go their separate ways. I have also experience this personal Marah in my own life. I'll share more later. God says there's a better way, nobody wins in going through a divorce. Slow down, you are venerable in your crisis.
Just how much stress will it cause not only to the broken couple, the kids, but all the connected family? Moms, dad's, son's daughter's grandma's grandpa's cousin's, niece's, aunt's uncles the list could go on and on.
Satan is the thief that steals and kills and comes to destroy. Jesus said I have come that you might have life and that you might have it more abundantly. God is great enough to turn anything around. I realize that it takes two to want to reconcile but I encourage couples to never give up, hold out for a miracle, wait and see what God's hands will do.
It's never too late to see what God has to say about your particular situation. God doesn't put every marriage back together, but there are some that He has put back in place. So who wins in a divorce? Well no offense to attorneys, but divorce attorneys have done quite well financially because of strife and tension and division in our homes.
Don't take the easy way out and run from your disaster at home. Settle down in your crisis and see what God has to say about your dilemma? Israel had a big decision to make at their bitter waters of Marah. Would they live there in bitterness or look for a miracle to make their bitter waters sweet?
